Use this hack to understand any SCOTUS Opinion

If you're like me, you hate to rely on CNN to tell you what anything means– especially not something as important as a landmark US Supreme Court opinion.

This week we got two of them.

Now, don't get me wrong. It is definitely best practice to actually read an important Supreme Court opinion. (They are written in English, after all).

However, if I don't have the time–or desire–to read an entire SCOTUS opinion, but I still want to know what it says, without partisan bullshit spin, I go to SCOTUS BLOG.

This site is a favorite hack of law students.

At this site, an attorney named Amy Howe digests and summarizes SCOTUS opinions without any partisan commentary.

These entries are incredibly useful if you are a law student who needs a bit more help digesting an opinion—or if you're a law student who didn't do the assigned reading, and knows they are about to be called on by the professor.

Howe sums up the Trump immunity decision as follows:

In a historic decision, a divided Supreme Court on Monday ruled that former presidents can never be prosecuted for actions relating to the core powers of their office, and that there is at least a presumption that they have immunity for their official acts more broadly.

She sums up the highly important decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo (not that Raimondo), thusly:

In a major ruling, the Supreme Court on Friday cut back sharply on the power of federal agencies to interpret the laws they administer and ruled that courts should rely on their own interpretion of ambiguous laws. The decision will likely have far-reaching effects across the country, from environmental regulation to healthcare costs.

So yes, be sure to access SCOTUSblog for quick, intelligent explainers that real legal professionals use.

Also, I hope you enjoy this witty Tweet from fellow traveler Jeremy Todd that absolutely deserved to go as viral as it did.

NOTES IN THE MARGIN

Last week was the 5 year anniversary of Justin Raimondo's death. Go read his archives here.
