Does This Bother You Too?

Being ridiculed for maintaining a dissenting position can certainly take the wind from your sails. After all, we're just human. But you can't let it.

Does This Bother You Too?
This is the Tweet I fired off

The first lesson in my forthcoming eBook is "Trust your Bullshit Detector."

But sometimes going with your gut can land you in hot water, especially if you are right.

Imagine this:

It's two hours past your kid's bedtime, and you are sitting on the couch scrolling Twitter, praying that he does not come out of his bedroom yet again.

You see something in the timeline that triggers your bullshit detector. You quote Tweet a base response. Then you forget about it.

Fast forward to the next morning and the comments are FILLED with people calling you an idiot.

And yes, in case you're wondering, this just happened to me Wednesday.

This email is not necessarily about my Tweet, if you're curious about it, read my replies.

Being ridiculed for maintaining a dissenting position can certainly take the wind from your sails. After all, we're just human.

But you can't let it.

Just how do you pick yourself up and press on in your work?

  1. Trust Yourself. There's a reason why your bullshit detector went off in the first place. Investigate it.
  2. Learn from Mistakes. Sort through the base insults to find something that might make you think. Does the response make a good point you hadn't considered? Consider the possibility you are wrong. Forget about the rest.
  3. See the Positives. You might have gotten some flak, but did the dissent come from a loud minority? Those in agreement with you are less likely to make a big point of it. My Tweet got far more "likes" than "replies" and earned me at least a dozen followers.
  4. Touch Grass. Keep in mind the forum where you floated your ideas. Twitter is not real life. It purposefully encourages incivility. Go do something with the people you love.
  5. Use it as fuel. Pushback might be a sign that you are over the target. Stick it to your critics. Redouble your efforts.

Whether you're right or wrong about something, you invite reaction when you put yourself out there. I have found these tips and tricks helpful in my work over the years. I think you will too.

I'll be sharing more tips and tricks with you on this email list as the lies and propaganda continue to roll in. We'll tear it apart together.
